Tekiah! Teru'ah! Shevarim! When we hear those calls, we know the sounds that will follow. They are heard each morning during the month of Elul, which is where we are now. This is the month that we begin to hear the call of the shofar, as a way of preparing ourselves for the Yamim Nora'im/High Holidays to come.
The symbolism of those calls this year might be: Tekiah: Awaken from your quarantine nap! Teru'ah: Arise and act; break the unhealthy habits of the past! Shevarim: Shatter your complacency through personal transformation!
As we approach a very different kind of holidays this year, Cantor and I will continue to suggest ways to stay connected or reconnect to Jewish thought, prayer, and text. We may not be together as we usually are, but we will be together, and will learn, pray, and forgive one another.
More later this week; take care, Rabbi Pivo
