EBJC Casino Night Hits the Jackpot!
EBJC Casino Night Hits the Jackpot!
Despite the snow, The East Brunswick Jewish Center held its first ever Casino Night fundraiser on Sat. Feb 6th and it was a huge success! Congregants and community neighbors joined in the festivities. Well over 200 people showed up to support the synagogue in its efforts to help meet their financial commitments. Attendees of the event were treated to an evening of Vegas-style table games such as roulette, blackjack and of course a poker tournament, with professional dealers. In addition to the games, food was catered and music was supplied by DJs. Thousands of dollars of prizes were available for the winners. As a non-profit organization, the synagogue relies heavily on fundraising efforts. The generous efforts of their volunteers and sponsors help make a difference in all their activities. Many community friends as well as synagogue congregants came out in the poor weather to help support the synagogue meet its operating and long-range financial commitments. A Big Thank You goes to Gary Moss and Lauren Altman and all the volunteers and sponsors who made the event fantastic!

Four panels from two stained-glass windows that once greeted international travelers have found a new home at the East Brunswick Jewish Center.
The two huge windows by famed Israeli artist Ami Shamir framed the ark of the International Synagogue at JFK Airport for decades, articulating the original chapel’s theme “reaching to the heavens and returning to earth.”
The original International Synagogue building was built in 1962 but was demolished and the synagogue was relocated within the airport several years ago, a victim to an airport renovation.
EBJC’s former rabbi, Chaim Rogoff, arranged to have his shul become one of eight synagogues to which the panels were donated.
The panels, using biblical and kabalistic themes to portray Jacob’s ladder, were formally dedicated in November and are now in the congregation’s lobby, said Rabbi Aaron Benson.

Ecumenical services for Thanksgiving serve as reminders of shared experiences
MIDDLESEX COUNTY — Rabbi Aaron Benson of the East Brunswick Jewish Center said organizing this year's 34th annual Community Thanksgiving Service has been both “an enjoyable and eye-opening experience.”
Each year, people of all faiths are invited to join members of the East Brunswick Clergy Council for a ceremony of thanks and prayer. The East Brunswick Jewish Center is serving as host for this year's service, which will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at 511 Ryders Lane.
Benson said he enjoys the fellowship with other clergy that transcends the bounds of specific religious faiths because, noting, “The lifestyle of a clergy person is so similar regardless of our belief system.”
But Benson said he has also been surprised to find the he and his fellow clergy serve congregations with near identical concerns.
“It was eye-opening just to see that while the beliefs and rituals we have are different, many of the same issues – such as struggling with the economy, family and schooling issues and all those sorts of things – are the same for religiously-minded people throughout East Brunswick,” Benson said.
About a dozen different faiths will be represented at the service that will be taped for airing on EBTV Channel 3 and will be shown on: Wednesday, Nov. 25, at 5 and 9 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m.
People of all faiths are invited to attend.
“All of the faiths that are participating share a sense of the importance of living a life of gratitude and the fact that on our shared American calendar we have this holiday around which we can all come together and express our shared sense of gratitude – that's what makes it such a beautiful service,” said Benson.

Creative Way to Deal with Passover Laws East Brunswick Jewish Center offers creative way to deal with Passover food ban

At 9 this morning, Jose Mendez of East Brunswick, a non-Jew, will become owner of a huge amount of food he'll never eat.
For the entire length of Passover, which starts tonight and ends next Thursday at sundown, Mendez will legally possess thousands of bags and boxes of bread, pasta and other leavened foods, or chametz, stored in the homes of Jewish people from the East Brunswick Jewish Center.

The East Brunswick Jewish Center was packed to capacity Monday night as supporters of Israel from all over New Jersey gathered to express their solidarity.
They listened to a firsthand account of life in the area from a resident of Sderot, a town in southern Israel, and heard from religious and civic leaders about the importance of supporting the nation in its military offensive against Hamas-ruled Gaza. The crowd at the Ryders Lane synagogue prayed for a speedy end to the conflict and donated money to help the most innocent victims of war — children. Like other rallies held throughout the United States, this one brought together Jews from different synagogues and denominations, and other supporters for peace in the region.
Such is something one would expect in an event sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Middlesex County, which is based in South River. read more ...

California rabbi succeeds leader who served 28 years

EAST BRUNSWICK — There is a new rabbi in town.
The East Brunswick Jewish Center (EBJC) spent a recent weekend welcoming Rabbi Aaron Benson, a Los Angeles transplant.
"Part of what guided me ... was finding a place where the culture of the synagogue tends to be a match," Benson said. "I think for me, what attracted me to the pulpit here, is that while the synagogue has had some ups and downs, it still has a robust congregation."
Benson pointed to the fact that over the past couple of years, an increasing number of lay leaders have become involved in the workings of the Ryders Lane synagogue, helping it to grow and thrive. He said he is looking forward to bringing what he can to the congregation by figuring out how it can become a greater source of spiritual meaning and fulfillment to the local Jewish community, as well as finding ways to enhance the congregation's good citizenship toward the community as a whole. read more ...

Rabbi Aaron Benson was so taken with the resurgence he found at East Brunswick Jewish Center he was willing to travel 3,000 miles to be part of it.
Benson, currently religious leader at Congregation Beth Meier in Studio City, Calf., outside Los Angeles, will leave that position in November to take over as the new rabbi at EBJC.
He will succeed Rabbi Chaim Rogoff, who retired last year after a tenure of almost 30 years. (Rabbi Mitchell Romirowsky’s one-year contract as interim rabbi recently ended.)
“A synagogue community is the best place to build a connection to God and life,” said the 32-year-old Benson in a phone interview. “It’s very attractive to be part of a community that’s really interested in building that connection and building itself up as a community. In a traditional Conservative synagogue such as this, you are around all facets of Jewish tradition and are able to build on that relationship with other Godly-minded people.”

The East Brunswick Jewish Center, which only a couple of years ago was losing members and money, has bounced back in the last two years with a growing membership, financial stability, new leadership, and increased programming.
The transformation has seen a spate of physical improvements, a spirit of volunteerism, and incentives that have even drawn members who had left back into the fold.
“It is so much better,” said the Conservative congregation’s copresident Scott Alter. “People are involved, and volunteers have come out of the woodwork. It’s a tremendously good feeling to see all the returning members.”
Jack Levitt, vice president of programming, said the current feeling of enthusiasm is palatable. “People just felt disenfranchised,” he explained. “Now they feel like stockholders once again.”
The synagogue has instituted programs and restructured its dues to welcome new and returning members.
